The things that made her Irene
Her family. Spain. Music and dancing. Her cats. Having her hair done. A wee wine or gin.
The story behind the book
Mum had dementia. On the door of her room in residential care, a simple A4 page described the things she loved.
It helped people see Irene, the person behind the illness. And it left me with a question I could not quite put down: what would be on mine?
This book brings together my mum’s story, my own experience of beginning again at 55, conversations with women I admire and a heartfelt conversation with my sister that brought us closer.
What you’ll find in these pages
For women who have spent years working, caring and being dependable, and for anyone curious about the next part of their life.
Personal stories about family, identity and the roles we carry. Moments that may help you put words to questions of your own.
Conversations about change and beginning again, with room for different experiences and different ways forward.
Questions to help you notice what matters and consider one manageable step. You can begin with a conversation, an interest or a little time for yourself.
Notice. Question. Be curious. Begin.
“You can value the life you have lived and still be curious about what comes next.”
